Night Lights - Clock Tower Projection
commissioned by painter Joseph Toney
Objective
• Compile the paintings of Joseph Toney into a creative and cohesive way to tell a story, projected on Denver's iconic Clock Tower.
• An abstract story of growth, emerging and evolving from different encounters while weathering the cold of the Rockies.
Client Notes
"Get wild with it"
• Simple could be better
- I think too much detail could be lost w/ the quality of the projection.
• Try to create a beginning, middle, and end within the loop.
- even if its abstract, having this visual flow should help cue the viewer in for the full piece instead of just glancing at it.
- a seamless loop could be fun w/ out a obvious reset
• Tell a story, Create a visual narrative
* A few first thoughts
-
an abstract journey through flat valley terrain, then high mtn peaks, then clouds, and beyond…
-
Create visual cues to degradation and draw attn to Climate Change.
Piece starts with snow in the mtns and transitions into the mtns catching on fire, cracking, falling apart. Representing drought and forest fires. -
Draw attn to urban encroachment on our wild places.
IE: could be mines, new condos, cities, roadways, etc… or less literally by tying in a gridded orange construction fence as a abstract element to represent this.

Thoughts
This project has become very dear to me.
It is a culmination of every talent I have put to use and it's something I've never been more proud of. Creating characters from scratch and making them come to life is an extremely rewarding process from start to finish. Every hurdle, every bug, all the weeks trying to fix one tiny detail is worth the time. The characters Tumbleweed Jones, Jericho Blaze and Tornado Slim have become people I care about and they deserve the best possible justice in production.
Due to retaining anonymity, unfortunately I can't link all of the content to uphold the freedom of creative expression.
